Normal Map not working with image switches

I have a character rig with legs that are rigged reverse and normally on an image switch to change between them when needed. I also have a normal map for shading. When attached to the image switch, it for some reason makes the patched parts of the leg become either raised or lowered on the map. When removed from the image switch, the layers are fine, but if I plug one into the switch and leave the other unattached, the patch shows up again.
