Is there a way to link drawings so that if you swap one, the other will swap?

No there isn’t. You could put both drawings inside of a symbol, then swap the symbol’s drawings, but then you would not be able to animate them without going inside of the symbol.

Well you can certainly log is as a feature request in that section of the forum, and then you know that it will be evaluated. I can definitely see the value of being able to do that.
