I have tried saving my illustrator file as every possible combination available and down saving it to CS4 CS3 and CS files. I tried exporting it as every option. I turned off anti-aliased and still nothing can be imported but jpeg and when I import jpeg’s I can’t edit them in any way. Please help. Why can’t Toon Boom just import Ai files?
Hmmm… Not really sure, why you’re not able to import those files…?
I have imported many of my Illustrator CS (version 11) files into Animate
without much of a problem…
Open the Library, right click the folder you would like to import your files, Right to Modify,
This takes away the “Lock” of that folder…
Go to File, Import, SWF, Illustrator Files to Library…
Importing bitmap-images like jpg’s etc…
Go to File, Import, Images…, check Vectorize Imported Items…

Nolan,
I’m working on a mac here FYI. I don’t really know what you mean by open the Library. How can I unlock the SWF, Illustrator Files to Library with a mac?
I’m very confused and new, please help.
Thanks
Start Toon Boom Animate / click on the Library Tab…
If you can’t find it, go to Windows (top toolbar) / Library…
Right-click (control-click) the Animate Library Folder / Right to Modify…
Then go to File (top toolbar) / Import / SWF, Illustrator Files to Library…
Navigate to your Illustrator file / select it / and Open…

Nolan,
I can now import illustrator files, thank you. However it just loads for a bit and then it asks for a new file name. After giving a new file name the image doesn’t come up.
Nevermind I think I have it. Thank you very much
A preview image should be visible in the right window of the Library panel…
If not, right-click any name / Generate Thumbnails…
Then drag any image into your viewport or timeline-window…
If still no luck, export from Illustrator as Legacy Format Illustrator 8…
Regards
Nolan
There is a script posted in the FAQs that you run from within animate. You run the script, navigate to the AI file select it and run the script. When finished it will have created a native toon boom file with all layers intact.
Additionally, the CS Illustrator file may have to be saved as CS4 or earlier with the PDF option selected when saving. I created a button in for this script in Animate 2 and keep it in the script toolbar area. Give it a try.
I agree with the ‘PDF’ option needed to be selected. I’ve tried to import images with that option DE-selected (thinking it would generate cleaner files) but was unable to see the image I was importing.

When you save your Illustrator CS5 file, do you Save As… Format: Adobe Illustrator (ai)… and then from the Illustrator Options dialog select Version: Illustrator 8?
That works for me every time. You will get a warning that saving to a Legacy format, such as Illustrator 8, may disable some editing features when re-opening again in Illustrator, but I have never had a problem importing it into TBA.
