I notice when I use the paint brush the canvas goes black and when I use the pencil it does not show till I let go of the mouse button, I’m using Windows Vista (if that matters) or do I need to go into a prefrence and make a change? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have the same problem with lines not being drawn until I release the mouse button (or the stylus). I’m also running Windows Vista.

This is usually related to the video card not refreshing properly. The first thing you should make sure of is getting the latest drivers for your video card. This is even more important on Vista since the technology is still pretty new and there are a great amount of fixes coming out at a pretty fast rate.
As for Toon Boom Studio you may also want to disable some of the features in the Display tab of your preferences for those may affect the speed at which elements are displayed.
