Drawing a pencil line that overlaps one or more times creates a vertex at the point(s) of overlap

When I draw a line that overlaps one or more times (with out the Auto-Flatten option turned on) and then select it with the Contour Editor tool I see that there are vertices created at the points of overlap. This is highly frustrating when one needs to edit the contours of the lines.

Is there anyway to get an overlapping pencil vector line to behave like Adobe Illustrator’s lines in order to go back an make accurate micro adjustments?
