Cell Swapping Problem

I’m creating my first animation. I’ve created a few cut-out characters with hierarchies. Some of the elements have multiple cells for cell swapping (i.e. hands and eyes). I then made library templates out of these characters.

When I insert a character template into a new scene, how do I achieve cell swapping when I need to add exposure to the character’s elements? The extra frames that contain the different cell versions disable adding exposure.

How do I achieve cell swapping in cut-out character templates? How can I make the different cells exist within one frame so I can animate my characters?

If you like, here is a short video demonstration, using cell swapping for animating
a head-turn for one of my cut-out-characters:

(no sound, it’s all fairly simple and self-explanatory)

Thanks so much Nolan! Your video helped me see that I had to select and set all frames to one cell, then swap them later as I animate.

It is simple now that I see it!

Thanks again,
