Background problem

On a previous pencil test i was able to see the back ground in the playback. But in a new pencil test i was unable to. I was certain that the program acknowledged that the back ground was there for it showed up when i viewed it in the drawing. The only difference between these two backgrounds was that the successful one was a painting and the other a drawing on the same paper that i use to animate everything else.

In the Playback view, you should see all the layers.

Is it possible that the layer on top is obscuring the layer below? I.e. the white of the paper is blocking the background? You can test this by erasing some of the drawing on top and seeing if the drawing beneath is revealed.
