The steps are as follows. Open Auto-Matte. Click on Custom. Use dropper tool from color window to pick a shade of grey from the stage. Clicking Ok and proceeding with auto-matte. The resulting auto matte is always a shade of grey that is about 5-10% darker than the one I selected. This happens across multiple projects.
