How can you make a leaf look like it is bending backwards away from the Camara as the camera runs through it?
Can this be done using bone deformers? If so, then how?
Or does this have to be a frame by frame animation drawing?

Paperless is always a good bet if you’re comfortable drawing.
I was intrigued so I did a quick test myself in 5 mins. It certainly isn’t perfect, but hey… check it out! Using a curve in this one, but I wasn’t sure which version you were using. You could add more to make it look better like an enveloppe deformer around the lead or use the meshwarp.
