Advice Required! Animating lines

Hi all,

I’m new here and just testing Toon Boom at the moment before I make a purchase.

What I need to do is give the effect that the diagrams are being drawn before our eyes. Like it’s being hand-drawn becoming more detailed as we continue to watch.

In the most simplistic way to explain, how do I animate lines?

One way to do it is by drawing the whole thing first and set that as your final frame. Then figure out the timing and erase backwards. You might put horizontal lines on one element and vertical on another.

This is an oversimplification, of course, but use a <a href=“http://www.donbluth.com/inbetweener.html#timchrt”">timing chart to figure out how much to erase over how many frames. Consider having a chart for each line (vary the spacing a little to keep from getting a too predictable look), and use the sum of those charts to figure the overall number of frames. Also consider if there will be a rest between drawings for the artist to move his/her pencil, and count that in your timing.

Let us know how it goes. I may want to do something similar in a few months myself.
